Annual Neighbourhood Survey 2009 - P&C

What Edinburgh Residents think about their neighbourhoods

Annual Neighbourhood Survey 2009

Each year, Services for Communities asks residents for their views on their neighbourhood; what are the best things; what needs to be improved and what they think about the services that the Council provides.

This tells us what the public thinks about things like street cleaning, road maintenance, recycling and parks in every neighbourhood.

In autumn 2009, just over 5,000 Edinburgh residents from across the city took part in the survey, (the largest of its kind in the UK).

Key findings

Overall the results for the city as a whole are very positive when compared with 2007 and 2008:

  • Satisfaction with neighbourhood management is 81% (up from 67%)
  • Satisfaction with neighbourhoods as a place to live is 92% (up from 86%)
  • Satisfaction with service at local office has increased to 95%

The top five most frequently mentioned priorities for improving quality of life in neighbourhoods across the city were:

1. Activities for children / youths
1. Street cleaning - joint top
2. Traffic management and roads maintenance
3. Policing
4. More amenities

The findings will be used to continually improve local service delivery across the city.
