Liberton & Gilmerton
The area which broadly makes up LIBERTON/GILMERTON, prior to its development from the 1950s onwards, consisted of farms, country estates and open countryside.
The area was also well known for coal mining and for limestone excavation. Numerous villages and hamlets were also found in the area; indeed the some of the areas were known in recent years as Urban Villages, eg Southhouse/Burdiehouse, Gilmerton, Gracemount, Moredun and Inch.
