A bit about the area
Portobello & Craigmillar Neighbourhood Partnership covers the local authority ward of Portobello/Craigmillar, with a population of 24,130. The area experiences significant variations in levels of income, unemployment, health, educational attainment and crime across its communities. The diverse needs and requirements of the communities that the Neighbourhood Partnership covers are brought together in the local community plan.
The area lies to the south east of the City of Edinburgh, comprising the coastal towns of Portobello and Joppa, and further inland, the communities of Brunstane, Newcraighall, Bingham, Niddrie and Craigmillar.
The area provides residents with access to major road and rail links, and to a major retail centre and shopping facilities. Amongst its features is Craigmillar Castle, one of the most completely preserved medieval castles in Scotland, which is set amongst natural woodlands. The sandy beach front and promenade of Portobello is also a popular recreational attraction for people from all over Edinburgh and beyond.
How the partnership works
Craigmillar Neighbourhood Partnership is a new way for key partners to work together in the area to improve local services and the quality of life. The partnership is responsible for developing a Local Community Plan which sets out the priorities for the area as identified by local residents.
In order to identify and develop approaches to the priorities in the local community plan, the Partnership has set up a Joint Officers Working Group with staff from relevant service delivery agencies. The group, including Neighbourhood Managers from SfC and Children and Families, Chief Inspectors, Voluntary Sector, Health and Social Care, the Craigmillar Partnership and City Development, will also have a key role in ensuring the delivery of the plan, through the set up of a range of thematic sub groups across the area.
