Kids engage in regeneration

Sighthill Regeneration 2012 Project
Sighthill Library has been working in partnership with Murrayburn Primary School and with colleagues in Services for Communities from the South West Neighbourhood’s Housing and Regeneration team in a project to involve local children in the regeneration process currently underway in the Sighthill area.
Classes from the primary school visited the Sighthill library to take part in a number of activities centred on the demolition of the high rise flats in the area. Each class split into three groups and had to answer quiz questions about the flats, design their perfect space to live in and decide what they could afford to have in the area within a budget. They were then visited at the primary school by the Housing and Regeneration team responsible for co-ordinating the demolition and the Community Liaison Officer from Safedem Ltd, the company in charge of the demolition itself, who gave them a talk about the demolition process and took part in a safety poster competition.
The classes will be returning to the library after the summer holidays to continue the project and will create displays of the work they have done in the library and their school. The first high rise, Broomview House, is due to be demolished in September; however this school project, with the partners, will carry on while the whole area is being regenerated. Needless to say all the teams involved are really looking forward to find out what these young people see as the future for Sighthill. Who knows, perhaps there are some budding architects in the class, next term should see some more very interesting and creative designs produced.
