Edinburgh Index
The Edinburgh Index was developed by the City of Edinburgh Council in 2008 to identify areas of social need across the city. The Index was initially used to provide evidence to help target and monitor the use of Fairer Scotland Fund in Edinburgh.
The Edinburgh Index comprises data from local government, the Health Service, Police and other national agencies. Unlike previous local indeces based primarily on Census data, the Edinburgh Index analysis can be repeated on a more frequent basis and therefore can also provide a basis for monitoring trends and outcomes.
The Edinburgh Index allocates a score of 0 to100 (with 100 being the most deprived) to around in around 3,900 census output areas in the city and offers the capability to examine relative levels of need in wide range of geographic areas and communities.
The index examines a range of indicators under the themes of Income, Employment, Education, Health and Crime. Although each theme measures social need in its own right, the strength of the index results from combining these themes to create a composite index.
