Winter Maintenance Update - 16 December 2010
The South West Neighbourhood are continuing to work on snow / ice clearance and gritting works within the area.
Due to the recent freezing temperatures there is a vast amount of compacted ice in various locations which requires specialist machinery to break up and remove.

Refuse Collection Update
Refuse have returned to normal schedules although there are still problems with access in some areas due to compacted ice.
Temporary strategic refuse collection points (skips) have been put in place across the city. Within the South West skips have been put into the following locations:
- Longstone - old B&Q site
- Ratho - Baird Road opposite church
- Westside Plaza - located within the car park behind the shopping centre

Work began to clear footways ice and to lay grit yesterday, and has continued today in:

Ward 9
Footways were cleared of ice and gritted on Colinton Road, beginning at Meggetland down to the roundabout where Colinton Road meets Polwarth Terrace.
Grit Dumps
We are currently identifying possible locations within residential areas to provide grit so residents can help themselves as per requests we have received. Once these sites have been identified we will provide exact locations.
Refuse Collection Update
Refuse have reported that collections have returned to their normal cycle, and collections were completed on Monday as scheduled.
Temporary strategic refuse collection points (skips) have been put in place across the city. Within the South West skips have been put into the following locations:

Core Roads Update
Due to the freezing conditions on Saturday night, category one routes were prioritised, and all were treated.
Core Roads are working to fill grit bins across the city.
Operational Update
The following information is an update of works carried out by ward on 11 & 12 December 2010 and scheduled works for 13 December 2010:
Ward 7
Works carried out on 11 & 12.12.10
Footways were cleared from the Westburn Park and Grove areas, towards Westside Plaza.
Footways cleared from Stenhouse Cross, working both east and west towards Broomhouse and Stenhouse.
Sighthill Court and Sighthill Gardens were due to be cleared, however no action was required when teams arrived on site.
Gritting carried out at:
- Tynecastle School
- Sheltered Housing at Stenhouse, Broomhouse and Saughton Mains
- Telfer Subway
- Steps leading to Dalry
Grit bins replenished at:
- Murrayburn Road
- Calder Road
- Kingsknowe
Scheduled works for 13.12.10
The greater Wester Hailes area has thawed in parts; however ice remains on some footways. Teams will be in the area today targeting localised areas as they arise.
Footpaths to be cleared and gritted in the Kingsknowe Estate and Redhall School Area. Snow piles are being removed to allow emergency vehicle access.
Ward 9
Works Carried out on 11 & 12.12.10
Footways cleared and gritted:
- From Craiglockhart Crossroads, along Greenbank Road and Greenbank Drive to Comiston Road on both sides
- The Steils
- Greenbank Drive
- Little John area
- Chesser Avenue (work ongoing)
Clearing snow and ice from:
- Glenlockhart Road
- The Steils
- Greenbank Drive
Scheduled works for 13.12.10
Footways to be cleared and gritted at Crossroads of Comiston Road and Greenbank Drive, working up towards Buckstone Terrace on both sides
Further clearing and gritting work across the greater Hutchison and Chesser area, from Chesser Avenue towards Gorgie Park Close.
Refuse Collection Update
Waste services are resuming scheduled refuse collections from today. Temporary strategic refuse collection points (skips) have been put in place across the city. See map here.
Winter Maintenance Update - 10 December 2010
The South West Neighbourhood are continuing to work on snow / ice clearance and gritting works within the area.
We are continuing to work through enquiries and prioritising them into the following categories:
- Individual life / limb medical emergencies
- Outlying areas
- Multi-Storey Refuse Collections
If schools are located within areas that contractors are currently working in then resources will be diverted to these areas for snow clearance / gritting of footways / access only and not the school grounds.

As you will be aware it has not been possible to collect refuse in many areas of the city, particularly where there is an individual wheeled bin collection.

Snow Clearing / Gritting:
Access to Carry Out Snow Clearance
There have been a lot of reports regarding blocked access routes by vehicles which is causing problems for gritting vehicles and snow ploughs. Joint work is ongoing with Environmental Wardens and Lothian & Borders Police to identify owners of these vehicles and make contact with them to move vehicles to allow access into residential areas.
Tuesday 7th of December
Due to the heavy snowfall yesterday and the scale of the project we must prioritise resources into the following categories for priority:
- Outlying areas
- Multi-Storey Refuse Collections
- Individual life / limb medical emergencies
If schools are located within areas that teams are currently working in then resources will be diverted to these areas for snow clearance / gritting of footways / access only and not the school grounds.
The core Roads Department have moved on to category 2 routes this afternoon but conditions are proving extremely difficult and as a result this is taking more time than expected to get through.
The following information is an update of works being carried out today.
Ward 7
Refuse collections are being carried out within the ward at multi-storey locations to empty paladin bins and blocked bin chutes to reduce potential fire risks. The following collections have been carried out today:
- Calder Court
- Calder Place
- Calder Gardens
- Currently working through Calder Drive
Community Safety Concierge staff have continued to clear footways, bus stops and steps within the Westside Plaza area.
Libraries
All Libraries within the South West Neighbourhood are open with the exception of Ratho Library which remains closed due to snow. A revised opening / closing time is in place for all libraries from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
Refuse Collections
Waste Services are attempting all scheduled collections for the following collections:
Domestic Collections:
- Side Loading Bin - reduced service but collecting
- Individual Wheeled Bin - no service
- Communal Wheeled Bin - reduced service but collecting
- Sack Collection - reduced service but collecting
Trade Waste:
- Operating reduced service but collecting
- Sack Delivery - operating but back calls
Recycling / Packaging:
- Operating reduced service but collecting
Paladin Bin Collection:
- Reduced service but collecting in multi-storeys. (Extra resources deployed to clear excess waste from Paladin bin rooms)

Snow Clearing / Gritting:
- Crews are attempting to clear snow and ice from on street communal bins before emptying them
Monday 6th of December
Ward 7
Task Force carried out clearing and gritting of shop fronts in:
- Stenhouse
- Whitson
- Balgreen
- Coffin Lane
- Telfer Subway
- Sighthill
- Parkhead
- Calder
As well as the above, clearance and gritting of underpasses have been completed in Calder Road and Wester Hailes Road.
Contractors will be working on the following areas tomorrow:
- Northcote Street
- Duff Street
- Sighthill Court and Green to allow access to the Health Centre
- Redhall Drive
- Clovenstone Gardens
Broomhouse Avenue was cleared on snow and gritted today.
Ward 9
Across the weekend, work was carried out at:
- Hutchison Crossway, footpath clearances on both sides of street
- Craiglockhart Road North
Contractors will be working on the following areas tomorrow:
- North Merchiston Care Home, Watson Crescent
- Little John Road
- Craiglockhart Place
Libraries
All Libraries within the South West Neighbourhood are opened with the exception of Ratho Library which is closed due to snow and Currie Library as the bus service has been withdrawn.
All libraries closed at 4pm today, and will open from 10am and 4pm tomorrow.
Friday 3rd of December
Update from Gritting Control
The teams are now scraping and gritting the category 2 routes across the city as the category 1 routes are up to date and there has been no further snowfall.
Ward 7
A team have cleared snow from footways and carriageways at Stevenson Grove. They are now moving on to Stenhouse Primary School and Saughton Mains Street and Saughton Mains Drive.
Refuse staff have been deployed to Mcleod Street, Dalry Road and Gorgie to assist with snow clearance / gritting.
A team are currently in Sighthill Court clearing footways around the health centre, they will then move onto Slateford Gait to clear the carriageway.
Task Force staff are currently working in the following locations clearing snow / gritting:
- Broomhouse
- Parkhead
- Sighthill
- Saughton Mains
- Longstone
- Kingsknowe
- Slateford Road shops
- Ballgreen
- Stenhouse
Specialist Services are working in the following locations clearing snow / gritting:
- Westburn
- Calder Gardens
- Murrayburn Road
- Wester Hailes Road
- Steps in Dumbryden
They are also gritting bus stops on above routes and school entrances.
Ward 9
A plan of priority works within ward 9 is currently being drafted.
Libraries
All Libraries in the South West Neighbourhood are open with the exception of Ratho Library which is closed due to heavy snow.
All libraries with the exception of Ratho will be open as usual at the weekend.
