Morningside/Bruntsfield Week of Action

An intensive week of activities supported by Morningside Community Council and focusing on environmental and community safety issues in Morningside and Bruntsfield is set to get underway this week.
The week of action kicks off on Monday 7 February running to Sunday 13 February.
As well as tackling environmental issues such as litter, graffiti and street lighting repairs, the week will see the Council's Services for Communities team up with Lothian and Borders Police and Lothian & Borders Fire and Rescue Service to raise awareness of the services each provides to the local community.
Kathy Evans, Community Safety Manager, said: "This is an exciting opportunity to get everyone involved in bringing out the best in their community. It will give people a chance to air their concerns about specific issues and to share their ideas on how to make their neighbourhood cleaner, safer and greener. The outcomes from the week will be extremely useful in helping us to determine priority issues, both short- and long-term."
Sergeant Scott Casey, Lothian and Borders Police, said: "This week of action is a great opportunity to show the local community how we go about our day to day business with our partners. It allows people in the community to raise any issues directly with joint services throughout the week and to meet the people that deliver a service to them. The various activities that are being hosted that week will bring all corners of the community together, helps to reduce the fear of crime, and increase community cohesion."
Councillor Tom Buchanan, Neighbourhood Partnership Convenor, said: "I am pleased that Neighbourhood Partnerships are taking actions on issues that affect local residents in their day to day."
Some of the activities going on during the week will include:
- Tackling anti-social behaviour
- Bulk uplift amnesty
- Street cleansing and graffiti removal
- Joint patrols by Lothian and Borders Police and Environmental Wardens
- Lothian & Borders Fire and Rescue Service carrying out residential and business fire checks
- Community Safety Officers doing face to face visits to residents
- Get On It information and advice mobile unit
- Deployment of CCTV mobile unit
- Checks carried out on licensed premises
- Crime prevention information and advice
- Road checks and road repairs
A function room above the Merlin bar building on Morningside Road will also serve as a 'hub' point where residents can give their views and share ideas on how to improve their area. Information gathered during the week will then be used to shape long-term strategies for the area.
