Kirkgate Improvements

We are pleased to announce that the Leith Neighbourhood Partnership Board has endorsed the community support for four key proposals to improve the area in front of the Kirkgate Shopping Centre and agreed to the proposals being implemented. Over 1000 people responded to our surveys and significant majorities were in favour of each of the four proposals for the area. In addition to resurfacing the area with high quality paving, the plans include:

• The planting of new trees
• Installing additional lighting
• Installing new smaller seating areas
• Removing the 'tusk' feature

  The design ambitions for the space include:

• Creating a distinctive meeting space
• Complement the works to upgrade the Foot of the Walk junction and the internal improvements to the Kirkgate shopping centre
• Retain and celebrate the historical Queen Victoria statue
• Make entrance to centre more open and accessible and more attractive route to maritime museum and South Leith Parish Church

Overall, we want to create a more welcoming, safe, and visually attractive public realm and these works will go some way to achieve this.
