Winter Maintenance Update - 31 December 2010
Operational Update
Across all wards, Task Force and Community Safety Concierge staff are removing the remaining grit from the temporary grit dumps. In addition to this, task force continue their normal duties. Specialist Services are assisting refuse in the removal of over spilling waste around communal bin areas.
Following the significant thaw over the last few days, contractors are focusing on the removal of snow piles.
Core Roads
Core Roads have been focussing on scraping and gritting Category 3 Roads today. There has been no requirement to grit Category 1 and 2 routes.
Refuse Collection Update
Waste services resumed scheduled collections but experienced problems in some areas due to compacted ice therefore were unable to make all routine scheduled collections.
Specialist Services continue to work with refuse to remove overspill from communal bins in the South West area.

Temporary strategic refuse collection points (skips) have been put in place across the city. Within the South West skips have been put into the following locations:
- Longstone - Old B&Q site
- Ratho - Baird Road opposite church
- Westside Plaza - located within the car park behind the shopping centre
- Sighthill Public Park
- Currie Library, Lanark Road West
- Deanpark Place, Balerno - top area car park next to play park
- Bavelaw Road, Balerno - car park next to the recycling bins

Grit Dumps
Any grit remaining in the temporary grit dump areas will be cleared over the coming days.
Festive Period Arrangements
Life and Limb requests will be reported by members of the public via 0131 200 2000 during the following periods 25th - 28th December 2010 and 1st - 4th January 2011 and forwarded onto the relevant contractor covering that area. Between 29th December - 31st December 2010, requests should be made via Neighbourhoods direct (as per current arrangement) or via Core Roads Winter Emergency Mail Box -

Medical Emergencies
|
If a customer needs to attend a hospital appointment for urgent treatment such as :
- A booked operation
- Essential follow-up treatment, e.g. wound dressing, chemotherapy
And the treatment cannot be carried out by the health service at home AND if the road is not passable by vehicles, we will seek to make arrangements to get the road cleared. Please note that we will expect customers to use taxis if necessary: we will not dig out private cars where a taxi can access the property.
Wherever possible we are asking customers to reschedule their routine appointments.

Funerals
|
We will be prepared to clear roads to allow a hearse to access property for a funeral cortege. We will not clear routes to allow people to attend a funeral.

Police requests for urgent for road safety
|
For example, where untreated ice has, or is likely to cause road accidents.

Other emergency services
|
Where access is urgently required by police, fire or ambulance services.

Emergency utility works
|
Emergency clearing to allow emergency works, e.g. access to broken sewers, gas leaks, or reconnection of heating equipment for elderly. This category is less likely as utilities normally arrange for clearance.
