Update from the North Neighbourhood Manager

Winter Weather - Are you Ready

Are you prepared for winter?Winter Weather Westie.jpg

We recommend you check out the   Council's website winter weather pages and prepare yourself in case we are unfortunate enough to be hit with some severe weather.

In the event that bad weather does come - the Council's website will be updated as many times as is required throughout the day. The South Team will issue bulletins, as we get them, via twitter and this website. Follow us on twitter @north_team

You are able to check out a map of gritting routes - find out when your street is likely to be treated or where you can find a grit bin. This information can be found on the interactive map on the   Council's website and shows gritting routes and the location of grit bins within a 250M or 1km of a specified location.

Remember - please be patient - Priority 1 road gritting routes in Edinburgh will always be the first to receive treatment. These include access routes to hospitals, bus routes and main thoroughfares.

You can also find lots more information about being ready for winter on the Scottish Government website.

Tips on how to help yourself and your community

Before winter

  • have your heating system checked
  • stock up on salt from your local DIY shop
  • get a good, strong snow shovel
  • have some food stocks
  • talk to family and friends about childcare
  • review your travel plans
  • get your car a winter health check.

During severe winter weather

  • check on neighbours
  • keep up-to-date with roads, schools and travel information here, on Twitter and on local radio
  • stay warm
  • avoid using your car unless really necessary
  • help by clearing snow and ice in your area
  • don't leave your car where it may block buses, gritters or emergency vehicles.

Join the snow clearing effort

The Council's focus is on priority routes for buses and emergency
vehicles and giving access to hospitals, health centres and schools.
But there's a lot you can do to help us keep the city moving.
If you would like to be one of our volunteer snow wardens,
contact your local neighbourhood team who will help with
training and equipment. Find out more about becoming a snow volunteer here. And an   Application form can be downloaded here.

You can also contact our North Customer Service Advisers by either telephoning 0131-529 5050 or calling into the North Neighbourhood Office at 8 West Pilton Gardens, EH4 4DP.
